Biomedical Scientist – Haematology/Pathology/Microbiology

Job Description:

We are currently seeking an experienced Locum Band 6 & 7 Biomedical Scientist with a background in Haematology and/or Microbiology to join a busy NHS laboratory in London. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality diagnostic services across multiple disciplines. Key Responsibilities:

• Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests within the Haematology and/or Microbiology departments, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
• Prepare and analyse blood samples, microbiological cultures, and other biological specimens in accordance with standard laboratory procedures.
• Carry out diagnostic testing, including blood film analysis, coagulation tests, culture identification, sensitivity testing, and microscopy.
• Interpret test results and assist clinicians in diagnosing and managing patient care.
• Ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated, following all relevant health and safety protocols.
• Collaborate with healthcare teams to provide timely and accurate diagnostic results.
• Maintain accurate patient records and ensure all documentation complies with legal and regulatory standards.
• Adhere to strict quality control procedures to maintain high standards of accuracy and reliability in results.
• Assist with the supervision and training of junior laboratory staff, if applicable.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all data protection and safety regulations.

Essential Requirements:

• HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist.
• Minimum of Band 5 experience within the Haematology and/or Microbiology discipline in an NHS or accredited laboratory setting.
• Demonstrable expertise in Haematology and/or Microbiology techniques, including blood films, coagulation, culture identification, and microbiological testing.
• Proficient in the use of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and laboratory equipment.
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to work efficiently and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise.

Desirable Requirements:

• Experience working within NHS London laboratories.
• Familiarity with advanced Haematology or Microbiology techniques, such as molecular diagnostics, PCR, or automated blood analyzers.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and regulations.
• Experience in mentoring or training junior laboratory staff.
