Job Description

NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity open to 15, 16 and 17 year olds across England. It is a unique programme mixing fun, discovery and challenge, designed to build confidence and prepare young people for their journey into adulthood.

We are seeking a motivated Team Mentor to lead a team of up to 15 diverse 16-17 year olds on the NCS Programme. Team Mentors support and develop the learning outcomes of the NCS participants throughout the whole NCS Summer programme including supporting the team through their social action project.


Duties will include:


  • Supporting the team of young people through the residential & non-residential NCS Summer Programme.
  • Supporting and working in conjunction with your Team Leader to provide practical and pastoral care of the participants, including night time hours during the residential phase.
  • To encourage the development of teamwork, leadership and social development skills.
  • To contribute to the development of the programme curriculum for the group to follow.
  • To support the learning progression of participants and support group and individual guided reflection as a core principle of the programme.


As a Team Mentor, you are committing to the completion of all training, modules and delivery requirements set out below.


Mandatory Training:

Two days of face to face training plus On Line Training on NCS Ethos, safeguarding, health and safety, Critical Incidents and basic first aid.


Dates of delivery:

Team Mentors must work with and support their team during all days of their allocated wave.



Although there is no planning time allocated to ATLs, you will be expected to correspond and liaise with your Team Leader in order to share information about your team.


Phase 1 (Team Building) & Phase 2 (Skills Building):       

Two residentials from Monday to Friday in concurrent weeks. Total of 10 days and 8 nights working with your Team Leader and your team of Young People



Phase 3 (Team Challenge):

Non-residential phase based in team’s delivery area. Work with your Team Leader and Wave Leader to support your team in planning and delivering their Social Action Project. Dependent on which programme type worked, Phase 3 can either be 30 hours during one week or 60 hours over two weeks.


Wrap Up/ Reporting:    

Support your Team Leader to complete and file reports that are due prior to the end of Phase 3. Final payments will be released upon receipt of final compliance reports and paperwork.



Team Mentors are expected to attend and see their team’s celebrating their summer’s work, and support the Team Leader in ensuring the team are at their best.


Accommodation & Food & Travel:

Accommodation and food is provided for the 9 days & 8 nights of the residential phases. Transport is provided to and from activity centres. Team Mentors must make their own way to pick up and drop off points. Team Mentors must organise their own transport to and from Phase 3 delivery locations.


This role reports to:                       

On matters relating to team and delivery – report to Team Leader

On escalated matters – report to Wave Leader, Programme Coordinator or Programme Manager
